Blood Money

August 12, 2010

I’ve been looking for the best price on the essential Crestor and Plavix. Why is there not a generic for either of these in this country?

Just when I think maybe, just maybe, the big drug companies actually care about the patients who rely on their drugs to keep us alive, I remember how they block the manufacture of generic alternatives, meaning anyone without insurance, or an extra $500 or more a month to pay for these two, is just up a dark and dangerous creek without a flashlight. Geez.

Hi Allie, You probably know all this? It costs billions to develop the drugs…then the pharm company needs to make the $$ back so they get intellectual property protection for oh, like, 11 or 14 years (can’t remember) before generics can produce a cheap version…unless the drug company makes a minor alteration and can extend the patent further and further. The companies do care, as they also have family members…but …capitalism requires investment, and then recouping that and of course, profitability. Not many entities are willing to forego profit in this world…maybe the next, hm? There are sometimes drug programs…and there’s also Canada?

I do know all that. The idea of capitalism capitalizing on someone’s health challenge just seems somehow off balance; somehow not right. I hold no grudge against profit, though. It’s just how much of a profit and at what cost? Lee was able to get us on an insurance policy through her work. However, it has a max med amount of less than $1000 annually. So, it’ll be good for about two months. As wonderful as that is, it also disqualifies me from any drug program. So, it is simply fear that feeds my rantings. Allie

Nice post Allie, Many of the people have doubt on generic medications and think it is not much effect as branded medication. Generic Drugs have the same ingredients as like branded drugs. Generic drugs dosages, side effects and drug interactions are all as same as branded medications.

But we may think that why branded drugs have high cost and generic drugs are very low so ultimately people come to the decision that generic drugs are not much effective as branded medications. Do you know the reason why generic drugs are cheaper and branded medications are high? The reason is branded medication undergoes many research and development to test the product and ultimately the firm has spent substantial money on research, so they strive to charge the higher amount to compete their expenses.

    so that it’s.
